Backing Up Helps
2005:09:19@ 03:22:24 -0500 under Computers
Just when I thought the weekend was going pretty smooth and relaxing (went for a boat ride in Portage with Patrick Younk taking some really neat pictures, and spent few hours in Cyberia Café with a LUG member), I did something I shouldn’t have — attempting to put a second ethernet card in my linux box! For apparently no reason, the machine stopped booting up and after some post-mortem, I realized that I cannot solve that problem. When I booted the machine in rescue mode, it wouldn’t let me do SSH or attach any external device, practically freezing up all my options. Fortunately, the second hard drive I recently put in came to my rescue : I transferred all the required stuff to that drive, detached it and re-installed (actually just installed) RHEL. And, when I mounted the second hard drive, all my data promptly showed up, preventing me from crying (and staying up all night). I am seriously considering buying an external hard drive and implementing Steve’s back-up script to avoid such heartbreaking instances again. For sure, backing up helps, a great deal…
