Hiking In Hungar…
2007:01:20 @ 18:28:46 -0600 under Photography
There is a typgraphical error (rather intentional) in the title. If you guessed Hunger was wrongly typed as Hungar, you are absolutely wrong. Read on to find out.
When you wake up early on a Saturday morning, without the aid of any additional device (such as an alarm clock and/or some on calling,…), you know something good is supposed to happen. At least, it’s an indirect hint that the remainder of the day should be well spent. Unusually bright day with clear blue skies made only this good omen (if you would let me say so) even better. So, having decided to make best use of such hints, /me decided to head into the woods to shoot some pictures. Knowing (from past such attempts) that such an attempt might actually leave me in starving hunger craving for food, I stopped in my favorite downtown place for some breakfast. And that’s where I met Tim and Kyle - and Kyle decided to join for some Saturday fun.
Well, if you are wondering where the hell is typographcial error in the title?, have some patience and read on… A short drive towards Tamarack City (it’s not actually a city but a town much smaller than Houghton), we reached a point beyond which my car would not go any further. So, from there on till the Hungarian Falls (Congratulations, you found it), it was all hiking. At first, my body resisted and revolted against all the hardship I was putting it through but stopping every once in a while to catch some breath really did ease the matters.

Hiking through snow-clad trails…

Hiking through snow-clad trails and underneath snow-capped trees…
It was good that at least one of us, Kyle, had better boots (I am convinced that I have to replace mine before any further such attempt) - he helped me get down/up some slippery regions
In near-perfect contrast to my last time being in this region, there was snow just about anywhere and everywhere. One could clearly hear some water trickling under our feet (yeah, we were walking/standing on top of frozen surface of the stream) but other than that, it was either ice cones or fresh white snow.

Closer look at ice-cones - or the frozen falls
Hiking further beyond the upper falls, we got to this place with a Keep Out sign - not that we followed the instructions - and shot few more nicer pictures:

Beyond Upper Hungarian Falls
Driving further for a while in the surrounding areas (Lake Linden, Laurium, Calumet, McLain State Park, etc), we got to see more nicer things:

Somewhere in Calumet - I should have corrected the barrel distortion, but…

Near the same somewhere in Calumet

Campground in McLain State Park - frozen shores of Lake Superior in the far-ground
Well, all these also meant that I missed the Polar Bear (jumping into the freezing lake) event conducted as part of Heikinpaiva and more importantly, it means that I had a good day burning out some calories I had put on last evening
Now, back to work and make clean, make process…
